Course Outline
The Human Biology General course gives students a chance to explore how the human body works from a cellular level to how systems work together. Students focus on how the various systems control the exchange and transport of materials around the body for efficient functioning.
Students investigate the body systems through real or virtual dissections and practical examination of cells, organs and systems. Students analyse and evaluate various diets against the Australian Dietary Guidelines and data from blood and urine samples to detect anomalies. Students are encouraged to use ICT to interpret and communicate their findings in a variety of ways.
The Year 11 syllabus is divided into two units:
Unit 1
This unit explores how the structure and function of cells help to sustain life processes, and the role of the digestive system in providing essential nutrients for the musculoskeletal system. It also explores how the dietary decisions we make can affect the functioning of body cells and our quality of life.
Unit 2
The circulatory, respiratory and urinary systems, and how they facilitate the exchange, transport and removal of materials for efficient body functioning is explored in unit 2. It also explores the importance of regular health checks to prevent or manage medical problems.
